The St. Louis Stars were founded in 1967 as one of ten original franchises in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), making them the first professional soccer team in St. Louis in decades. The club was established by St. Louis businessman Bob Hermann and, after the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association following their inaugural season, the Stars became a charter member of the North American Soccer League (NASL). Unlike many NASL clubs that relied heavily on foreign imports, the Stars were known for fielding predominantly American players, many drawn from the deep well of local St. Louis talent. The club reached the NASL final in 1972, falling 2-1 to the New York Cosmos. The Stars split their home matches between two venues over the course of their existence—Busch Memorial Stadium in downtown St. Louis and Francis Field on the campus of Washington University. Following the 1977 season, the franchise relocated to Anaheim, California, where it was rebranded as the California Surf.
